2026.8.12 → 2026.8.13 一晩で変わった森 / A Forest Changed Overnight
やんばるの山奥に立つ、樹齢約1000年といわれるオキナワウラジロガシの巨木。
巨大な台風の力をまともに受けながらも、通過後もその姿を保っていました。
A giant Okinawa urajiro oak, believed to be around 1,000 years old, stands deep in the forests of Yanbaru.
Even after taking the full force of a powerful typhoon, the ancient tree was still standing.
ツアー前日の8月12日、私はコースの安全確認のため、この巨木まで歩き、写真を撮りました。
そして翌13日、ツアーのお客様と同じ場所を訪れ、再び写真を撮りました。
そこで初めて気づきました。
前日と風景が違う。
台風通過後、必死に耐えていたのでしょう。幹にできていた大きな割れ目が、その一晩でさらに裂け、崩れていました。それに伴い、隣で倒れかけていた幹も折れ、わずか一晩で巨木の姿が大きく変わっていたのです。
When I returned the next day with my guest, something had changed.
A crack in the old trunk had split farther open overnight. Another weakened trunk beside it had also broken. In just one night, the scene had changed.
前日に見たとき、この老木はまだ立派に立ち、台風を乗り越えて再び生きようとしているように見えました。
しかし、本当はぎりぎりのところで立ち続けていたのかもしれません。
自然の中では、丈夫そうに見える大木でさえ、私たちには見えないところで大きな力に耐えています。
It looked strong and almost as if it were beginning to recover.
But perhaps it had simply been holding on with all its strength.
目の前で起きたこの変化は、森の中には人の目では気づきにくい危険があることを、老木が教えてくれたように感じました。
同時に、森が今も生き、絶えず変化していることも感じさせてくれました。
This ancient tree reminded me that nature can hide dangers we do not immediately see.
It also reminded me that the forest is alive—and always changing.
巨木のそばでは、オキナワウラジロガシの幼木が、大きな葉をいっぱいに広げていました。
千年を生きてきた老木が少しずつ姿を変えていく一方で、その足元では次の世代が光を求めて育っています。森は崩れながら、また生まれ、つながっていく。そんな時間の流れを感じさせる光景でした。
Nearby, a young Okinawa urajiro oak was spreading its large leaves wide.
While the thousand-year-old tree slowly changes its form, a new generation is growing beneath it, reaching for the light. The forest is always changing—old life gives way, and new life grows.
ゆっくり歩くから、気づけることがある。
同じ森を繰り返し歩くから、発見できる変化がある。
危険を知り、無理をせず、それでも森を楽しむ。
それも、やんばるを歩く面白さの一つです。

When we return to the same forest again and again, we discover how it changes.
